I sometimes have people contact me who are concerned that they won’t be allowed spices on Nutrisystem. And, they are imagining themselves eating bland diet food. They see themselves as toast without butter or jelly, bagels without cream cheese, sandwiches without mustard, and salads without any dressing.
The truth is, you are allowed well-chosen spices within moderation. Like all food items, spices are grouped into a category. For example, fruits are considered “smart carbs.” Protein is considered a “powerful fuel” and condiments and sauces are placed in the “extra” category. And this is where choosing carefully can be very important. If you can find a condiment item that’s under 10 calories per serving, it’s limitless. May you get all that you want. But if you choose an item in the “other” category that has more than twenty calories per serving, limit it to three times per day. Now, to be fair, some people need condiments more than three times per day.
Just thinking about it, you’ll probably want butter or jelly for breakfast, and maybe some for lunch and dinner, but that still amounts to three times a day. Admittedly, there are several examples of Nutrisystem food that lends itself to these additions. Of course, the breakfast bagel is one. Also, hot dogs and hamburgers call out for mustard or ketchup. Eating salad without dressing doesn’t give satisfaction. (The company provides a grocery list on its website that lists suggestions of brands that offer low-calorie, low-fat, and low-sugar options. I’ve tried many of them and I’m often surprised that they How cool.) Better yet, many suggestions fall into the unlimited category.)
The serving size on most condiments (honey, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, cream cheese, salad dressing, salsa, and syrup to name a few) is one tablespoon. So hopefully, this can make you feel a little better. You don’t need to choke down on dry toast or eat a salad without any dressing. And yes, you can also grab some ketchup for the hot dogs or some bar que sauce for the sloppy joes or some salsa for the fajitas. You can have more than three servings per day if you choose carefully. But even if you don’t, you’ll still have a choice of condiments for at least all three main meals.
