What is raw food?
A healthy raw food diet is made up of whole foods in their natural state, such as:
-
fruit (sweet, fatty or starchy)
-
vegetables
-
nuts and seeds
-
legumes (usually sprouts)
-
grains (usually sprouted)
-
sea vegetables
-
raw spices
-
Edible Algae (Spirulina and Nori)
As with most things in life (especially diet), there are various viewpoints on the best approach to eating a raw food diet. This is purely individualistic and the only way to determine the best approach for you is by doing a little research and trying out different eating styles. Many people get caught up in the confusion and online politics about the best way to thrive and eat a raw food diet and never start again. Don’t let politics or a lack of direction stand in the way of you experiencing extraordinary health through simple food.
Popular types of raw food diets
Low GI Raw Food Diet: Or otherwise known as the Low Sweet Fruit Diet. A person following this diet will avoid sweet fruits as much as possible, while eating tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, bell peppers, lemons, and limes. Their main nutrition is on greens, sprouts, sea vegetables, nuts, seeds and avocados. It is often seen as a ‘tasty’ approach to raw foodism.
High-sweet fruit diet: People who eat a high-fruit diet aim to get most of their daily calorie intake from sweet fruits, such as pineapples, bananas, mangoes, dates, oranges, cantaloupe, apples and stone fruits. Their diet often includes leafy greens, starchy vegetables, and occasionally small amounts of nuts and seeds.
80/20: Means 80% raw and 20% cooked. This is often referred to as a high raw diet where people eat raw food (mostly fruits and vegetables) during the day and then low-fat cooked vegetables and legumes in the evening.
Smoothies, and green smoothies in particular, have been the new buzz word in mainstream health circles as of late. Blending and juicing is the easiest way to ensure optimum nutrition for us and our families. Adding a fresh green juice or raw vegan smoothie to your diet every day can make a huge difference to your health.
