Eating healthy for kids can be difficult… What do your kids like to eat on a regular basis? Most parents say their kids love to eat junk food: macaroni and cheese, candy, chips, cookies, and any other treats they can find. Even though your kids may want to eat these things, it is important to remember that you should teach your kids about healthy eating habits.
Start by talking to your kids about the benefits of eating healthy foods. Help them understand why it’s good to eat whole foods and what those foods do to help their bodies. Explain how healthy foods provide our bodies with the nutrition we need to grow, repair and get stronger.
Involve your kids in the meal planning process. Let them help you plan the menu, and then take them grocery shopping. The grocery store is a great place for kids to learn about all the food options out there. Walk them through the produce section and explain why fruits and vegetables are better than candy and sweets.
Another great way to help your kids eat more healthy foods is by letting them help with meal prep. Even young children can help by standing on a chair and doing small tasks. Show them how to prepare healthy meals, and they’ll take pride in their work as they’re helping prepare dinner for the family.
Focus your family’s eating habits on healthy foods, but it’s okay to allow them some indulgences from time to time. Talk to your kids about how it’s okay to eat treats once in a while, but most of the time they should focus on eating healthy foods that provide nutrition.
Your kids may be resistant to eating healthy, so keep in mind that it takes time! Be patient and keep working with them, and over time you’ll find that healthy eating for kids is a lot easier than you originally thought!
