Low-carb diets involve eliminating carbohydrates from your diet, or at least limiting them, and including more protein and fat. But even if you cut out grains, starchy vegetables and fruits, will it still help you lose weight, and more importantly, will you be healthier and will the weight loss results last?
If you cut out all vegetables, fruits and grains, the answer is no. Your body needs the nutrients you get from those important foods to keep you healthy. In fact, if you eat only protein and fat, you are at a higher risk of heart disease, cancer and other types of diseases. But there is a way you can follow a low carb diet and still be healthy. This way.
Eat whole grains instead of processed grains such as white rice and white bread. They’re empty carbs, whereas whole grains can actually help you lose weight. For example, eat brown rice instead of bread or pasta.
Choose green, leafy vegetables and broccoli. A leafy vegetable, such as kale, paired with broccoli, for example, will give you some great nutritional value. While it’s best to eat a variety of vegetables, you can’t go wrong if you eat green, leafy vegetables instead of cutting vegetables out of your diet completely.
Keep fruits to a minimum. Eat some fruits from different color groups to get the best nutrition. For example, eat one strawberry, a piece of cantaloupe, and a handful of blueberries. While it won’t add a lot of extra carbs, it will help you get essential vitamins and minerals.
Eggs are a great way to add protein to your diet because they provide many of the same nutrients as fruits and vegetables without the high carbs. For example, you get omega-3, vitamin A and many other supplements from eggs. If you’re really trying to follow the advice of a low-carb diet, eat only the egg yolks.
If you remove these foods from your diet to lose weight quickly, chances are you will put the weight back on later. This is called “yo-yo” dieting. This is because your body will be so depleted of nutrients during a diet that you will crave those foods and eat a lot more of them later. It is better to completely eliminate bad for you foods like junk food, and reduce your intake of good for you foods including grains, fruits and vegetables.
The worst things you can eat while on a low-carb diet are sugary drinks, snack foods, and desserts. Before you stop eating whole grains, fruits or vegetables, eliminate these from your diet. Also, it’s important to know that a low-carb diet will result in a decrease in energy. This is because your body needs carbohydrates to produce energy. If you find that you don’t have enough energy to maintain your regular lifestyle, you may want to cut back on carbs too much. Add them back in until you feel ready to meet your daily responsibilities, or consider changing your diet.
