Health study: A recent study by Lancet states that more than half of the Indian population is not physically active. Lacent’s study expressed concern about the physical inability of Indians and stated that the day is not far when more than sixty percent of the Indian population will fall victim to problems caused by lack of physical activity. This study published in Global Health states that more than half of the Indian population is not able to meet the guidelines of adequate physical activity set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
What does the Lancet study say?
The Lancet study indicates that Indian women are more physically inactive than men. The percentage of physical activity among men is 42 percent, while the percentage of women in this regard is 57 percent. This clearly means that Indian women are not able to stay physically active.
The study indicates that while the lack of physical activity in the country was 22.3 percent in 2000, this figure has increased to over 49 percent in 2022. This clearly indicates that by 2030, around 60 percent of Indian population will become physically unfit and will start falling victim to diseases caused by lack of physical activity.
reasons to worry
From a health perspective, it is important to be physically active every day to stay healthy. The World Health Organization recommends 150 to 300 minutes of physical activity each week to stay healthy. If someone does not do 150 minutes of moderate activity, then they should do 70 minutes of vigorous activity.
This means that, overall, getting physical activity daily is important for good health. The WHO states that if one does not practice physical activity, the body can be exposed to cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes, as well as diseases such as type 2 diabetes, dementia and cancer. Lancet surveyed 195 countries for this study on physical activity. During this period, India ranks 12th in the world in terms of physical activity and poor health.
