Positive peer support allows students to seek appropriate support during distress and also prevents the intensity of mental health problems in adulthood, the study noted. Research conducted by Dr. Shreevidya Vikram, Mental Health Professional, KS Hegde Medical Academy, under the direction of Dr. Rameela Shekhar, Director, Manashanthi, Mangaluru, found the need to promote mental health among students through of intervention at the policy level.
Dr. Shreevidya recently received her Ph.D. for this study. She told TOI: “We recommend introducing mental health modules into the university curriculum. Another critical suggestion added in the research is building a peer support network, in which student volunteers will be trained with basic helping skills and able to work with mental health professionals to achieve positive mental health,” she said. .
This study found that among those experiencing CMD, most students had followed emotion-focused coping strategies, as well as negative or maladaptive coping strategies such as alcohol and drug use.
“It is seen that the academic achievements of the students are affected indirectly by the coping styles they followed, the poor attitude to seek professional help and the use of informal support from the close network. While seeking support from their friends or peers, negative peer pressure was observed, which could affect the coping styles of these young minds. The methods used for parenting at home have also influenced the coping styles of these students during distress. We have recommended a module with the necessary techniques to be implemented and taught at the university level for students,” she said.
“Seeking the support of someone who makes the person realize their mistakes and problems, think objectively and help achieve success, contributes to the mental health of students. Such a circle of friends can bring a positive transformation in your college life and later life as well. The pandemic has added to the stress among students over the past two years,” observed Dr. Shreevidya.
