summer weight loss activities

do you hate the gym?

I can not lie. There are some days when I absolutely hate going to the gym. It’s 80 degrees and sunny outside with a slight breeze. I want to live there, not in the basement. How can I take my cardio activities outside? People tend to get fixated on running and forget about all those everyday activities that we love to do that also double up as intense calorie burners. After reading an article published by the Mayo Clinic about calorie expenditure, I decided I needed to share the best ways to enjoy the sunshine. And Burn calories in an hour.

Basketball

I’m 6’2″, white, and have never played a real game of basketball in my life. Remember Wesley Snipes and Woody Harrelson in “White Men Can’t Jump”? story of my life. A lot of my friends at school like to go to the park and play pickup games. We’re in West Philly so there’s always a game going on.

canoeing

My family, my brother and I were young. Our canoe is still under our deck, but I definitely enjoy going out on the lake and canoeing to great fishing spots. Many of the children PA meets regularly go camping with their friends. I’m not sure I’d trust them on a 30 rack canoe, but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Golf

Cigars, beer and golf go hand in hand. It’s counterintuitive to be out drinking and golfing in the heat, but to everyone else. Me and my friends are starting to play again. It’s a great way to spend a day outside with a little competition. The calories listed below are for carrying your clubs, but it’s also just 1 hour’s worth of activity. Think how long it takes you to play one round. Yes, it’s a good little workout.

hiking

I’m not into the woods or anything, but when it’s nice out a lot of people like to go hiking. Personally, I hate being eaten alive. Hiking can be a grueling workout because you’re climbing on different surfaces with different inclines.

running 8 mph

I have a mud race coming up in a week. It’s called Muck Ruckus MS and it’s for a great reason. Nowadays I don’t run 7:30 pace on flat surfaces, so I’m sure trucking at that pace won’t do in the mud, but running is always a good option for summer cardio.

softball or baseball

Living across the street from baseball and softball fields my whole life means I’ve seen my fair share of late night adult leagues. These guys and gals are out there having a great time, and while there’s a little competition in it, they get a good workout keeping up with their buddies.

float

My pool isn’t big enough for laps but swimming is an amazing workout. I never really swam for exercise until my sophomore year of college. I felt like I was going to sink to the bottom midway through my fourth 50m lap. Sure, I was running them… but it was still pretty pathetic. Water has many medical benefits and is a great alternative to high-impact cardio activities like running.

How will you fit?

There is no one right answer to the question “How do I lose fat and/or get fit?” If you want to stick to your program, you need to do activities that interest you. If you’re afraid of water, you probably won’t stick with a swimming routine for very long. Do what you love, work hard and you will see results.
