Is Your Keto Diet Clean or Dirty?

In CrossFit Diet Tips we have written extensively about a good diet program for athletes. Whether you follow a keto style diet, or follow a paleo diet, there are good ways and bad ways to do it. The name alone does not describe any particular diet program. You can follow it perfectly, but if the foods you are using are of poor quality, you are doing more harm than good. In this article we will focus on the ketogenic (keto) diet.

The keto diet is defined as eating in a way to produce ketones in your body. Ketones are produced by the liver from fat and this process is triggered by eating very few carbohydrates and a good amount of protein. Ketones are used by the body for energy. Thus, the keto diet essentially burns fat as a source of fuel for the body. Your body burns fat continuously. When your body produces ketones, it goes into a state of ketosis. Ketosis will burn fat without worrying about fasting. That is, as long as you keep eating the ketogenic diet.

This brings me to our topic of clean vs dirty keto diet. Since this type of diet limits carbohydrate intake, typical meals may consist of seafood, meat, and low-carb vegetables. This does not mean that it is okay to eat fast food burgers or other commercially raised meats. If you’re only cutting down on your carb intake, you’re living a “dirty” keto diet. Vegetables, meat, seafood, etc…, must be organic and non-GMO.

We advise you to stay away from any processed foods or foods packed with preservatives. These will sabotage any diet and prevent you from living a toxin-free life. Any diet works best when the food is basic and clean.

The detoxification process takes place in the keto diet when consumed properly. If you add toxins through foods, you are not helping your liver or your health.

Eat fresh, organic vegetables. Try to regularly eat a variety of colorful vegetables that are rich in fiber. The more you do this, the better and tastier they will taste. Soon, your body will actually be craving them with every meal.

As far as fatty products are concerned, choose healthier sources. This could be organic flaxseed, olive oil, avocado or coconut oil. Many of these are considered non-inflammatory foods. Foods that cause inflammation would be those such as dairy products or some nightshade vegetables.

When following a clean keto diet, remember to stay well hydrated. Many people don’t realize that water helps with all daily functions, including digestion and organ production.

Finally, remember, if you’re following a “dirty” keto diet, you’re doing yourself a disservice. Stay ‘clean’ and stay healthy.
