Ayurvedic ways to ensure thick hair

In Ayurveda excessive pitta dosha is attributed to hair loss and hence the treatment strategy in general is aimed at reducing pitta dosha.

Excessive consumption of fried, oily, greasy, spicy, sour and acidic foods leads to an increase in Pitta. Apart from these, tea, coffee, alcohol, meat and smoking can be responsible for the increase in pitta.

For this, Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) oil is the most common choice of medicated oil. Mahabhringaraj oil and Neelbhringadi coconut oil are also considered a good option. These are for external application. Apart from these, amalaki (Embelica officinalis), haritaki (Terminalia chebula) and vibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica) are an excellent remedy for hair fall. They can be taken internally.

Powder of Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) should also be given orally. Method of administration One teaspoonful mixed with honey twice a day on an empty stomach.

If baldness comes at a young age, then Hasti Dantmashi (elephant teeth) is of great use. These are to be mixed with honey and applied externally. This is generally done in the afternoon and is allowed to dry. It is to be noted that it may initially cause skin irritation and reddish discolouration but with continued application the hair starts to grow.

Narasimha Rasayana is specially indicated for hair loss. It also increases sexual power in both sexes and increases semen volume in men. The most common oils used are Trichup oil, Dhatri hair oil, Sesa oil, Nutrich oil and Nilibhringdi coconut oil.

Nutritious diet like butter, ghee, milk and other high protein foods are strongly recommended in addition to medicines. Worry, sleepless nights, suppression of natural urges, excessive indulgence in sex are to be avoided so are fried foods.
