I recently had someone email me and tell me that he noticed that when he didn’t have time to shower after football practice, he noticed a higher degree of hair loss and hair loss the next day. She wanted to know if not showering or washing her hair could be contributing to her hair loss. I’ve also had people say that they’ve been told that poor hygiene can cause hair loss, but yet, their hygiene habits are above or beyond reproach and they shower and wash their hair every day. (and sometimes more) and they’re still losing a lot of hair. In the next article, I’ll discuss my thoughts on hygiene, bathing, washing hair, and hair loss.
First of all, it is my opinion that although regular showering is certainly a good idea, as it is not related to your scalp, it has little to do with your hair or its fall. However, most people shampoo while taking a shower. So, if you’re skipping a shower, you’re potentially skipping washing or shampooing your hair, which can be a mistake.
Regularly removing dirt, build-up, androgens and DHT from your scalp can be very important to both scalp and hair health. When I was having this much hair fall for so long, I noticed that every time I washed my hair, immediately after that I had even more hair fall. I was wondering if leaving it on or washing less would give me a bit of shedding. I also found from research that there is a subgroup of people who believe that washing can contribute to shedding and who limit or skip shampooing and/or bathing because of this.
I tried skipping shampoo for a while and although I did get a brief respite from hair loss, in about a week’s time, my hair loss had only intensified enough that I probably couldn’t stick to my regular routine. would have lost more than Yes, many people have a belief that manipulation of hair leads to more hair fall. And, I understand why people feel that way. But, what’s often happening is that you’re just massaging and manipulating strands that would have eventually gone away anyway, no matter what.
Sure, the wash might have done it a little quicker. And seeing this process being completed simultaneously can lead to the impression that it is the washing itself that is the problem. But unless you’re using products or shampoos that you’re allergic or sensitive to, it’s usually not an issue. It’s important to keep your pores free of debris, build-up and blockage. This is especially true if you are sensitive to androgens and DHT or have hair loss due to androgenic alopecia or AGA. And, even those suffering from TE or telogen effluvium need to keep their scalp clean so that one problem doesn’t lead to another.
Now, some people will take the opposite approach and shampoo and/or shower and use products that are too harsh in an attempt to rid their scalp of DHT and androgens. It can also be a wrong call as it can strip your scalp of its protective oils and cause more irritation. In an effort to protect itself, the scalp will then produce more oil and potentially more androgens so you may be doing more harm than good. Washing hair daily or even every other day is usually sufficient for most people. And this is for the scalp, not the body. It’s my opinion that daily showering is a good idea, but it has little to do with the hair or scalp.
