Before I did a lot of research on this diet, I had no idea that it was actually designed to be low in carbohydrates. It works a lot like the South Beach or Atkins diet by putting your body into ketosis and burning your own fat. But, you don’t need to eat only eggs and meat all the time like many similar diets do. There are lots of dessert and snack type options, which is a good thing. Yesterday, someone emailed me and asked “How many carbs per day can you consume on Medifast?” I will answer this question in the next article.
Average Amount of Carbs in a Day of Medifast Foods: You probably already know this, but you’ll eat six meals per day on this diet — five of these meals are provided by the company and one of them (called “Lean and Green”) you make yourself — (Based on Medifast guidelines, of course.)
On average, all six meals will provide you with about 80 -100 grams of carbohydrates per day. Of course, it’s best to be on the low end of this range, but there have been times when I’ve been on the high end of it and I found using ketone strips that I was able to stay in ketosis and burn fat . , Here’s a look at the carbs contained in five food samples.
Sample food with the amount of carbohydrates involved (in grams)
cappuccino 13
porridge 15
chocolate shake 13
chili 15
Caramel Protein Bar 13
Apple Cinnamon Crunchy 8
,
Total 77 grams
Including in lean and green food: As you can see, after eating five meals, you’re just under the optimal 85 grams of carbs. But, you still have your “lean and green” meals to make and consume. This meal should include three servings of lean protein or meat (5 – 7 ounces) and vegetables. The company provides guidelines that list vegetables in terms of lowest and highest on the glycemic index. However, high-glycemic vegetables will work as well, since you’re limiting fruit in the beginning. You still have plenty of leeway, as long as you stick to the “lean and green” guidelines. You’d need to consume 23 grams of carbs a day to meet the guidelines — which is pretty low.
Hopefully, you can see it’s not too painful. You’re not limited to pork rinds, bacon, and eggs, so you don’t have to worry about your fat and cholesterol. The foods are great and you’re eating snack-type foods that you wouldn’t normally associate with being low in carbohydrates.
