Is it hard to spot short hair? I tell you

I get a lot of emails about how to determine if your hair is short or not. People find that this determination is very important because fine or thinning hair usually indicates androgen driven alopecia (AGA) or chronic hair loss that has reduced the follicle’s ability to regenerate healthy hair with normal thickness. has affected. Either way, miniaturization will need to be addressed quickly because if it isn’t, volume and coverage are going to be negatively impacted very quickly. But how difficult is it to identify short hairs? Not a lot if you know what you are doing. I’ll go over this more in a following article.

Inadequate coverage (showing through the scalp) and/or shiny scalp test: Often, the first signs of miniaturization are white scalp (or red or pink if you have inflammation) visible through your hair. Thin or fine hair has less coverage so you’re looking at more scalp. Often, you’ll notice a noticeable lack of volume or fullness before your scalp really starts to show. Also, many times you’ll notice a shine or sheen on your scalp that wasn’t there before (this isn’t always true, especially for women, but it could be indicative or androgen-driven loss or DHT if present.)

To fact-check the hair you think may be shorter: Another way to tell what’s really going on is to physically examine your actual strands of hair. First, you’ll need a regular, thick, and coarse strand of hair for comparison purposes. You’ll often find it on the back of your head. You can either remove one of these or look through your brush or comb for one. These hairs should be long with tapered ends. (Taped ends mean the hair hasn’t been cut recently. If it is, the ends will be blunt.)

Next, you’ll need to get a strand that may be as small or too fine as you think. Typically, you’ll find these hairs on the top of your head near your part line, at the temples, or on the sides (for most women). To be secure, you want to make sure the edge is long enough that you can easily grab onto it.

Look at the two strands of hair side by side. (The easiest way to do this is to find a light colored surface such as a kitchen or bathroom counter and lay the two wires side by side so they can be easily seen.) Is there a noticeable difference in diameter or color? Often, thinner hair will be slightly lighter in color. Next, grip the hairs that you suspect may be thinning between your fingers. Quickly move your hand upward so that the strand is forced upward. Note how the strand comes down. Does it come down quickly or does it stay in the air like a feather because it doesn’t have enough weight? Then, repeat the process with normal or coarse hair and note how long it takes each to come back down.

Often, this process will make the differences very clear. Short hair will look and behave differently than normal hair. So to answer the question of whether short hair is hard or difficult to spot, the truth is that it is not that difficult. You’ll usually have your suspicions when looking at long distances, but you can often easily confirm upon closer inspection.
