Mayo Clinic Grapefruit Diet Scam

For decades, people have emailed and faxed versions of the Mayo Clinic Grapefruit Diet because the diet predates the Internet. Motivated dieters have requested it and discovered it online because of its urban legend reputation for its success. The only problem is that these diet plans have never been reviewed or endorsed by the renowned Mayo Clinic. In fact the Mayo Clinic does not endorse it and calls it unbalanced and dangerous. The word Mayo was originally supposed to refer to mayonnaise, but it was changed to the Mayo Clinic in an attempt to make it appear more legitimate as somehow being human nature.

Grapes and Weight Loss

Unfortunately, by calling this the Mayo Clinic Grapefruit Diet and intentionally misleading people, some very important weight loss successes may be being overlooked. Basically most of the diet plans have no special significance except for the fact that it requires eating a grapefruit with each meal. A landmark study by Dr. Ken Fujioka, director of nutrition and metabolic research at The Scripps Clinic in San Diego, found evidence that consuming grapefruit helps with weight loss.

clinical research

Over a 12-week period, Dr. Fujioka found that those who consumed grapefruit lost 3.3 pounds in weight, compared to the control group that was given a placebo and lost about half a pound. As to why there was this difference, Dr. Fujioka theorized that the grapefruit was responsible for lowering insulin levels. While the results may not sound shocking, keep in mind that the dieters did nothing differently from those who were given a placebo. Take this difference into account over a period of years and you can see how significant it is.
