Nizoral is a shampoo prescribed for seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff and tinea versicolor (rash caused by fungus), but has been shown to have a very positive effect on hair loss. Both men and women suffer from traction alopecia, and the use of Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo shows promise in treating both symptoms and helping to regrow lost hair.
Nizoral Shampoo contains Ketoconazole, which is a synthetic antifungal preparation, which is used to treat dry scalp and dandruff. Early studies suggest that using Nizoral shampoo containing ketoconazole is beneficial in helping to regrow lost hair.
It is believed to work by cleansing the scalp, removing pore-clogging material, and increasing circulation to the scalp. It reduces the effects of inflammation- caused by hair pulling, and allows hair follicles to receive essential nutrients that are needed for hair growth. Inflammation is also responsible for disabling hair follicles, which is why hair follicles affected by traction alopecia remain in the dormant (telogen) phase.
Ketoconazole which is the active ingredient in Nizoral shampoo helps in reducing the Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) levels at the skin level. When DHT is not removed from the scalp, it combines with other chemicals to permanently deactivate hair follicles.
Used appropriately at least twice per week, Nizoral will keep the scalp clean and hair follicles active. While helping to increase hair production, the shampoo will also eliminate dandruff and provide relief from a dry, irritated scalp. The shampoo also has a thickening effect on the hair. This is partly due to its effect on inflammation which ultimately results in more hair retention.
Nizoral Shampoo and its active ingredient, Ketoconazole, do not make any overt claims for hair regrowth. Only that it has shown itself to be an effective addition to other treatments for traction alopecia hair loss and thinning hair.
Ketoconazole has few side effects other than topical skin irritation for people with sensitive skin and those who try to overuse the product. It is best to check with your doctor before starting any treatment and to test a small area of your scalp for a reaction before shampooing for the first time. Nizoral can have a slight drying effect on the hair and should be followed up with a moisturizing conditioner if you have dry hair. it is one of the few hair loss shampoo which may complement other topical treatments for traction alopecia. If you have sensitive skin, a gentle stimulating herbal shampoo will probably be better for your scalp.
Hair growth occurs at a rate of about half an inch per month and so many people who begin treatment with Nizoral see a significant difference in 30 to 60 days of use.
