I sometimes hear from people who are afraid they will have to give up their favorite foods on the Nutrisystem diet and feel it is not acceptable to them and they are hesitant to try the diet for real. An example of a food mentioned in this type of concern is sausage. You may hear comments like: “I’m wondering if I’ll have to give up sausage on Nutrisystem. I eat sausage maybe three times per week and it’s my favorite meal. I like to eat it for breakfast and sometimes on crackers for a snack. Is it allowed on the Nutrisystem diet? If so, how often?” I’ll explain the solution to this concern below.
Look for foods in the diet that already contain sausage: Believe it or not, some of the menu items contain sausage and, since the company is providing it to you, you don’t have to worry about eating it. The foods have been modified to be diet friendly so you don’t have to worry about eating them. Some examples of foods you might enjoy are Egg and Turkey Sausage Rolls, Turkey Sausage and Egg Muffins, Red Beans and Rice (includes Chicken and Oiled Sausage) and Cajun Style Chicken and Sausage (includes Pork Sausage).
So that almost covers it for Nutrisystem meals that include sausage. What will be left if it is allowed in the category of power fuel. Look, you’re asked to add fresh grocery ingredients to each meal. These are divided into categories. And the protein category that includes meat is the energy fuel category. I took a look at the Power Fuel list and the items on it that are closest to sausage are Canadian bacon and turkey pepperoni. Lean ham and lean beef are also on the list. Although sausage isn’t specifically on the list, I think the key here is that the meat be lean and low in fat. If you can find a turkey or chicken sausage that falls into that category and you limit it to a small serving, it will probably work.
I know this person loved crackers and sausage for breakfast. The diet does have pre-packaged crackers on the menu, so if you’ve used them with very small servings or low-fat turkey pepperoni, you can enjoy the same flavor in a more healthy, diet-friendly package.
