Hair loss is very common in men as they age. Masturbation is also very common among men, so naturally there have been people who tried to use hair loss and baldness as a way to avoid what some felt was a sinful or unnatural act. Yet if logic is applied to the issue, it is very difficult to see the difference between masturbation and normal sexual activity with a partner that results in ejaculation. Both produce an orgasm and both result in the release of seminal fluid. So on this basis it can be concluded that there is no relation between the development of male pattern baldness and frequent masturbation. So now in more liberal times, when wives tales and other moral admonitions have faded from prominence, this alleged connection is generally regarded as false and without any basis.
However, during recent and advanced studies on the causes of hair loss, it has been found that a by-product produced by the body from the male sex hormone testosterone, called DHT, increases the rate of hair loss. DHT is short for dihydrotestosterone, and since testosterone is related to sexual function, consistent sexual arousal, the possibility of ejaculating between intercourse and even masturbation has been questioned and additional studies have been conducted to see if this may be true. There is an old belief that frequent male masturbation can lead to premature balding.
DHT is not normally present in significant amounts in the body, but when ejaculation occurs frequently, it turns out that some testosterone is converted to DHT. Abnormally high levels of DHT can lead to a number of conditions, one of which is an increase in the size of the prostate gland. But another effect is that more DHT is found near the hair root, which can affect the hair growth cycle and cause hair to fall out more quickly from the follicle.
If this research is correct, it would be interesting to learn how to reduce DHT production and accumulation. One way is to reduce the frequency of ejaculation, whether through normal intercourse or masturbation. That may be asking a lot from men who have the urge to achieve orgasms over and over again. In fact avoiding ejaculation often causes other painful conditions, the so-called “blue balls” feeling of pain and tightness.
Other “habits” may be easier to control. One is to avoid eating red meat such as pork and beef. Chicken, turkey and fish have no effect on DHT production. One’s diet should include more vegetables, fruits, seeds and nuts.
Finally, DHT can be eliminated from the scalp and follicles with the use of certain hair treatments and shampoos that contain DHT-removing additives. Diet and hair treatments may be combined, perhaps even with a reduction in masturbation, to achieve a successful reduction in hair loss.
