The Dukan Diet for Vegetarians – Is a Meat Free Low Carb Diet Possible?

The Dukan Diet is a four-phase high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet. The first phase of the Dukan diet, the Attack phase, consists only of protein. Nuts and beans, typical sources of protein for vegetarians, are not allowed on the Dukan diet. So then how can one create a vegetarian diet menu that includes only protein only food?

a pescetarian, commonly understood a vegetarian who eats fishMeeting the demands of the Dukan Diet won’t be much trouble. They can find enough protein in fish and shellfish. A meal composed of various pieces of fish, smoked salmon, mussels, shrimp, crab meat, etc. will provide a rich supply of protein and variety. Many pescetarian fish also eat animal products such as eggs and dairy. Smoked salmon and cottage cheese, a food enjoyed even by many meat eaters, makes a great and delicious meal suitable for any phase of the Dukan diet.

However, there are vegetarians (perhaps the majority) who do not allow themselves fish. Vegetarians, after all, don’t eat animal flesh and fish are animals! Is it possible for these people to follow their conscience along with the diet?

Tofu, familiar to most vegetarians, is allowed to be included in the diet. Dr. Dukan, whose book is not aimed at vegetarians, includes tofu in the list of allowed foods. Perhaps, through this diet, many meat eaters who previously saw no reason to include tofu in their diets will consider this worldwide popular food as a novel addition to their menus.

The book does not mention textured vegetable protein (TVP), although it is a high protein food that contains few but low carbohydrates. Quorn, a mycoprotein, like TVP is not mentioned in the book. However it is also a high protein food that is low in carbohydrates. This vegetarian food is now available in many different forms and varieties. Some have a higher carbohydrate content than others, so vegetarians will need to shop carefully.

Skimmed milk, low-fat cottage cheese, fromage frais and quark are all mentioned and allowed in the diet. Unlike vegetarians, vegetarians allow themselves these products, as well as eggs (also allowed in the diet). These foods can be used liberally with some restrictions on egg yolk and milk.

Creating a viable meat-free menu will be a challenge for vegetarians who wish to follow the Dukan diet. While it may not be possible to reduce carbohydrates to the minimum level recommended by Dr. Dukan, it should be possible to get close to that ideal.
